Research interests

Daniel Hunt is a global health policy analyst specialising in the intersection of public health, climate change and corporate power.

He is a PhD candidate at the Centre for 21st Century Public Health, University of Bath, United Kingdom. He is also a Senior Adjunct Fellow at The School of Public Health, The University of Queensland, Australia, and a Fellow of the Planetary Health Equity Hothouse Future Leaders Programme, School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet), The Australian National University (ANU).

Dan's doctoral research focuses on how policies to improve health and climate outcomes might address the impacts of unsustainable commercial actors and their enabling economic systems on politics and governance. He investigates questions such as:

  • how do unsustainable industrial actors undermine effective systems of governance for health, and how does destabilised governance create reinforcing conditions of health-harming corporate conduct?
  • what might be needed for more health-sensitive economic systems to emerge?
  • how might calls for multisectoral health and climate policymaking be applied in practice?
  • how should policymakers define 'climate-damaging' industries as commercial determinants of health?

Dan was a technical consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO) Headquarters in Geneva from 2020 to 2025, working in the Economic and Commercial Determinants of Health (ECDoH) Unit, Department for Social Determinants of Health, and in the Office of the Director, Department for Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs).

As well as advising a range of clients on health and climate policy and programmatic strategy in a consulting capacity, Dan has spent more than a decade in policy development related to the determinants of health for multiple civil society actors. In these roles, he participated in national advocacy campaigns and landmark policy 'wins', such as the introduction of plain, standardised tobacco packaging in the United Kingdom, and the establishment of the UK Government's Soft Drinks Industry Levy (SDIL).

Dan received a Master of Science with Distinction in Food Policy from City, University of London. For his research into the use of social media as a digital determinant of health, he received the Worshipful Company of Cook's Prize. He also holds a Bachelors (Hons) in Human Geography from the University of Durham.
