AbstractHerein we report the [1,3-bis[2,6-bis(1-methylethyl)phenyl]-1,3-dihydro-2H-imidazol-2-ylidene] copper tert-butoxide catalysed reduction of phosphinites to diphosphanes using bispinacolatodiborone as a reducing agent. The scope of the reaction was explored, producing diphosphanes in quantitative yields from phosphinites at modest temperatures (20–80°C) in reasonable timeframes (24–48 hours). The system was then used to investigate the production of phosphorus oligomers and elemental phosphorus from phosphonites and phosphites respectively.
