Second harmonic generation is a non-linear optical process that doubles the frequency of light. It is used to characterise materials and also has commercial applications. This thesis aims through the usage of novel 2D materials and metamaterials to enhance second harmonic generation down to the nanoscale. The study of said materials was mostly undertaken through multiphoton microscopy. A technique predominantly used in the life sciences, but here shown as a useful tool for investigating 2D materials. This was achieved through polymorphs of WS2 which revealed doubly-resonant SHG emission. An introduction to how plasmonic nanoparticles, such as Au nanoparticles, can also be used to enhance SHG is also shown. This could later lead into the application for the combination of the two materials to further increase the SHG emission.
