The history of the crafts revival in the twentieth century has been very scantily documented in recent publications, although the proceeding period, the Arts and Crafts Movement, has now attracted serious and prolonged attention, Ethel Mairet is one of the craftsmen who has been justifiably heralded as a pioneer of this revival (and thus of the twentieth century crafts movement) and because her chief working period fell between 1910 and 1952 she belongs firmly in its vanguard. She was the foremost hand- weaver in Britain in the first half of the twentieth century and this the first biographical study demonstrates the many forms her work took to achieve this position.
