A Strategy for the Implementation and Integration of Modern Computational Techniques into the Design and Development of Industrial Products

Abstract

The objective of this project was to provide an industrial company with the capability to successfully apply modern computational modelling so as to improve the design and product development process. It was identified that fluid flows and heat transfer were important features in the design and development of Spirax Sarco products and that the use of computational fluid dynamics could prove useful in the design process.

A strategy was outlined to guide the integration of this new design tool within the product development process. This strategy considered who would be using the tools, where the knowledge would come from and where it would be stored.

As part of this strategy, a number of flow cases were studied and computational modelling methodologies were established. These methodologies were applied to active design projects to demonstrate the use of computational fluid dynamics within the design context. The flow cases included an approach to modelling control valve performance, modelling of hot and cold water flows through orifices, and also computational modelling applied to flow meter performance optimisation. This knowledge generated was transferred into the company as part of the implementation strategy.
