Abstract
The motivation to adopt new technologies was assessed by a survey of school pupils in different parts of the country. Results showed a significantly lower level of motivation in Devon than elsewhere. The pattern of results for Devon is described and analysed in relation to the composition of the local socio-economic environment. Alternative ways of interpreting the results suggest both pessimistic and optimistic views about Devon's regional growth potential. Policy options relating to the positive and negative interpretations are proposed.
