Abstract
Becoming a published author involves a bundle of interwoven processes which unfold in a non-linear manner. Along the way, these processes result in a range of written 'outputs', including books, book chapters, conference papers, journal articles in 'open issues' and 'special issues', and other forms of communication such as research reports and contributions to academic blogs. In this chapter, I offer a set of reflections based on my experience of having academic work published in different formats and outlets. My objective is to prompt the readers' thinking about both how they develop their own approach to 'publishing and not perishing' and to offer some, hopefully useful, practical advice. I emphasise the importance of being interested in the topic we research and write about, of reading, of enjoying the writing process, of submitting work for publication to different types of outlets and in different formats, and of cultivating relationships with co-authors, editors and reviewers.
