Abstract
This paper takes an overview of contemporary vehicle design in the bus industry and examines the impact of weight and emissions control equipment on vehicle performance and cost. The demands of the manufacturer, operator and customer on the vehicle design are examined, and the measured operating conditions of a sample bus fleet are compared to the standard bus drive cycle. The impact of these differences on the vehicle systems and infrastructure are considered, and the future of vehicle design is examined in this light.
