Abstract

The use of Open-Learner Modelling (OLM) within Intelligent Learning Environments is becoming more common. By allowing learners a greater control over their learning experience, OLM systems indeed have the ability to improve the involvement of learners in their learning process whilst enhancing their learning performance. Interface personas appear to have real potential in motivating and engaging the user in their learning experience in addition to facilitating human-computer interaction. Similarly, meta-cognitive processes have proven to be of great importance in learning. In this paper, we describe on-going research aimed at developing a learning environment that helps students acquire meta-cognitive skills. This work is firmly grounded in research in Open-Learner Modelling, interface personas and affective computing. We then discuss plans for a study to evaluate the impacts of using emotive interface personas following the Traffic-Light system metaphor of learning. This supports children’s help-seeking and self-regulation behaviour, engagement and learning outcomes. Results of this research will help the creation of Intelligent Learning Environments where children have a better appropriation and understanding of their User-Model component while developing meta-cognitive skills.
