Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of the challenges surrounding the teaching of cultural understanding in the language class. Drawing from current scholarship, it will engage with the definition of “culture” in the context of language learning, including the challenges around its integration in the languages curriculum and its reliable assessment. It will also reflect on a survey conducted amongst a small sample of HE language teachers on whether and how they embed cultural content in their practice. Finally, using some of the principles distilled from the literature, it will offer some suggestions on how to use translation to develop cultural understanding systematically.
