Abstract

This paper outlines the way in which the ESF Scientific Network "Space Processes and Electrical Changes Influencing Atmospheric Layers" (SPECIAL) came into being, and how the ideas involved have evolved via discussions in the network. Both the organisational structure and some scientific themes are covered to assist readers of this SPECIAL special issue of the Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics.
