Abstract
This is the Final Report on a systematic literature review investigating the
incidence of selected autoimmune diseases conducted by the Department of
Pharmacoepidemiology at the Postgraduate Medical School (PGMS), University of
Surrey (UK) for GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals. This Final Report contains the
search strategy, the number of abstracts selected, the number of full papers
selected and retrieved, and data abstracted for most of diseases in the original
list (see below). Our Department’s expertise is in the area of epidemiology and
although we have research experience in a number of the diseases included in
this review, we do not profess to have specialist knowledge of all diseases.
Therefore, where appropriate, we have consulted hospital specialists to ensure
our understanding of the diseases studied was accurate and our interpretation of
clinical issues such as diagnosis, differential diagnosis, tests needed, treatment
regimens expected, etc was correct. As a result, we are confident regarding our
interpretation of studies and our opinion on the risk of missing cases of disease
or over-estimating incidence rates.
For all diseases included in this Final Report, data abstraction is complete and
detailed information on the incidence rates found in the various studies is
included, together with an interpretation of what is the most probable incidence
of disease, taking into account all studies.
