Abstract
Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is a new epidemiology tool with wide-ranging applications spanning from global SARS-CoV-2 surveillance through to estimation of illicit drugs and wider lifestyle chemicals usage in communities. The strong potential of WBE utilisation as an epidemiology tool for public health assessment in the context of communicable disease, lifestyle and exposure to chemicals is discussed in this chapter, as well as key aspects of WBE workflows are considered. These include: (i) selection of specific human metabolic biomarkers, (ii) characteristics of urban water catchment (population size and mobility in a WWTP catchment, wastewater flow rate), (iii) sampling, sample preparation and analytical tools needed for sensitive and selective biomarker quantification in wastewater, and (iv) accounting for WBE workflow uncertainties.
