Abstract
This chapter reviews the ‚classical‘ and ‚modern‘ research on daydreaming and mind-wandering. First, the concept of dissociation is discussed. Next, the construct of daydreaming is defined and distinguished from related constructs based on the work done in the 1960s and 1970s as well as the modern daydreaming (mind-wandering) research. A taxonomic analysis is graphically presented in shape of a decision tree (also available in English). This tree can be used to explain and integrate apparently contradictory daydreaming and mind-wandering research. Finally, it is argued that research should focus more on the content and cause of stimuli independent thoughts, as this has been widely neglected so far.
