Abstract

Solid state vacuum pyrolysis of Os₃H₃(CO)₉(μ₃-COMe) (1) gives the dark purple octanuclear carbido cluster Os₈C(CO)₂₂ (2) in ca. 15% yield. An X-ray analysis of 2 shows that the carbido-carbon is encapsulated in a trigonal prismatic cavity within the metal core.
