Abstract

This paper presents results on the relationship between reading enjoyment and activities that teachers typically carry out in primary education classrooms and identifies those practices suitable for usage at home during school closures. The research employs a large-scale student survey with 951 randomly selected participants from Colima, Mexico and ordinal logistic regression for analyses. Findings revealed positive and statistically significant associations between reading enjoyment and a range of teacher-led activities, controlling for household support. To our knowledge, no previous research has investigated the activities teachers lead in the classroom in relation to reading enjoyment in primary schools in Colima, Mexico. The study seeks to inform policy, teaching practices and parental engagement with reading at home during the school closures due to the coronavirus pandemic and protracted violence in this geographical region.
