Abstract
Approximately 580,000 primary total knee replacements (TKRs) are performed annually in the United States. 1 The number of revision knee procedures, now about 53,000 each year, is steadily increasing. The survivorship of revision knee joint replacement is generally worse than for primary knee replacement and becomes steadily worse if rerevision is necessary. 2 Recent analysis of survivorship data show that if revision is required, patients undergoing a second or later revision are approximately 6 times more likely to require rerevision than patients undergoing a first revision. 2 In addition, the costs and risks associated with revision surgery means that there is both financial and emotional incentives to increase the longevity of primary TKR.
