Abstract

Approximately 40,000 revision hip arthroplasty procedures are performed annually in the United States. 1 The prognosis for revision joint replacement is generally worse than in primary surgery; revision patients are approximately 5 times more likely of undergoing a subsequent revision compared to patients undergoing their first revision. 2 Furthermore, due to the cost of revision surgery, 3,4 there is great incentive to not only increase the longevity of initial primary joint replacement, but also to reduce the incidence of subsequent revisions for revision patients.
