Abstract
The Smoking Cessation 2008 conference demonstrated that, although various treatments are currently available (eg, NRT, bupropion and varenicline) and constitute a large market, only one in five smokers will succeed in quitting smoking for 12 months. In addition to the scope for novel pharmaceutical products, the importance of counseling during attempts at quitting was a recurrent theme at the conference; physicians and pharmacists have a key role in providing support. Marketing, legislation and community health initiatives all further contribute to the incentives that encourage smokers to attempt to quit.
