Abstract
The buccal route may be an alternative for the administration of drugs which may present certain problems or risks when administered by another route. This route of administration is taking on a certain importance if we also include the active ingredient in a bioadhesive form. This article aims to review the most significant aspects of buccal anatomy, bioadhesive pharmaceutical forms that may be applied by this route, and the main tests developed for measuring bioadhesion in these systems.
