Abstract

This volume deals primarily with the chemistry of aliphatic acids bearing hydroxy, amino, and carbonyl groups (including a second carboxylic function). The authors were all asked to emphasise those areas which most closely reflect current trends in their respective subjects in addition to bringing the coverage up-to-date. This has been achieved with great success. One subject in particular, that of amino acid chemistry, has undergone a spectacular increase in activity in the last two decades, a fact associated with new methodology which allows the synthesis of biologically important polypeptides and advances in drug design which target smaller peptides and their mimics as control agents in many diseases.
