Abstract

The development of self-testing devices has revolutionized the health monitoring and diagnosis areas by providing the patients with reliable home-based analysis. However, to be considered as real alternatives to the pharmacy or general practitioner visits, the devices should be affordable for the public. Here, we review the technologies that are currently employed for the fabrication of low-cost biosensors for commercial use. In addition, emerging technologies or new applications of manufacturing processes traditionally utilized for other purposes are evaluated as future substitutes for the current techniques based on the speed, accuracy, versatility and cost of the procedure.
