Abstract

This study focuses on the circular economy within agrifood chains and its relationship with sustainable trade. Its objectives are to identify food products suitable for export that derive from the valorization of waste from the apple and olive oil processing industries in Chile (pomace and orujo, respectively), and to estimate the environmental benefits that would come from developing these businesses through reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. A synthetic trade indicator based on the methodology of Hidalgo et al. (2007) is used to identify food products that contain dietary fibers from agroindustrial residues. The application of this tool revealed cereal-based snacks and yogurts to be the most promising such products for Chile, as they may yield a potential market of US$236 million. Developing the circular economy this way would contribute 0.03% to Chile’s nationally determined contributions and 0.08% to its methane reduction commitments.
