Abstract

There is a long-established interest in the role of school principals as leaders and promoters of effective, efficient, and equitable learning spaces. While research regarding leadership models dominates, there is a shortage in the literature about approaches to evaluate school principals and headteachers for accountability and development purposes. This review spanning the previous 2 decades identifies 21 international contexts that articulate standards for school principals, evaluation procedures and professional development. Findings show the similarities, differences, advantages and challenges across different evaluation systems. Reflections on the suitability of principals' evaluation for professional growth and school improvement are outlined, and future avenues for inquiry are put forward.
