Abstract
These research notes are based on the results of the research project ‘The Movement of the Unemployed in Argentina’, Non Governmental Action Programme, Economic and Social research Council (ESRC), United Kingdom. The paper explores a neglected aspect of the ‘Piquetero’ phenomenon: its organizational innovation. It is suggested that unemployed workers’ organisations offer a significant organisational innovation characterised by flexible structures and the implementation of multidimensional collective action tending to deal simultaneously with issues that were historically confined to trade unions, political organisations, NGOs or social movements. These organizational forms (sui generis) allows them, on the one hand, to create new forms of sociability towards the broadening of public spaces for the design and implementation of public policy. On the other hand, helps them to influence the decision making process and obtain resources from the government without scarifying their organizational autonomy and their capacity for mobilisation and opposition to the state.
