Abstract
This paper represents a case for the use of a Decision Support System (DSS) within the electronics manufacturing industry. The aim of the system discussed is to operate as an on-line decision tool for the shop floor, focusing on printed circuit board (PCB) fault diagnostics. The DSS would be of use to industry where the expertise is leaving or where industries wish to import expertise in a readily accessible format accessible by a number of workers. The research introduced describes industrial and academic priorities, and a hybrid framework for the design of such systems is defined. Finally, a pilot study is undertaken and a prototype decision aid using ExpertRule is validated. The use of the DSS illustrates how the shop floor operator can use knowledge gained from other operators and how the system could be used to incorporate new knowledge
