Abstract

The paper reports on the first observation of polarisation self-switching enhancement associated with transverse mode switching in a VCSEL. The VCSEL used in the study is a 10-μm diameter GaInAs/GaAs device operating at 960 nm in two orthogonal polarisations. To achieve polarisation self-switching, feedback to the laser is provided by an external cavity, including a quarter-wave plate (QWP).
