Abstract

We report on a novel ballistic electron spectrometer that images the k-space structure of open orbits confined by a magnetic field gradient. Magnetoresistance measurements were performed on a AlGaAs/GaAs/Dy device which supported magnetic edge states. Point contacts were used to ensure the commensurability of edge state period to the length of the waveguide. Periodic oscillations in the non-local magnetoresistance were observed, which we ascribe to the discrete nature of the orbits. A semi-classical model is used to describe the device, and gives good agreement with experimental results.
