Abstract

An active beam propagation model is used to optimize waveguide designs under lasing conditions. A 2-D beam propagation model is developed to spatially resolve the laser both in and out of the epitaxial plane. Preliminary effective index and overlap calculations are performed in the facet plane. The near and far field patterns for a range of tapered waveguide designs are subsequently simulated.
