Abstract

A comparative measurement is reported of the linewidth enhancement factor of bulk and multiple quantum well (MQW) long-wavelength diode lasers using the chirp halfwidth product method. Although MQW lasers provide substantially improved chirp performance compared with bulk devices, this depends considerably on the drive conditions when gain switching.
