Abstract

This paper presents a level set based method for optimising the design of fibre angles in composite structures where the angles vary continuously. Advanced fibre placement (AFP) composite manufacturing technology can lay fibres at continuously varying angle offering an opportunity to significantly improve the overall structural efficiency from the traditional straight fibres. The level set method approach parameterises the fibre paths using the level set function values. The level set optimisation method is formulated using the sensitivities to update the level set function values. The primary advantage of this approach is that the continuous and manufacturable fibre paths are ensured in the optimum solution, which will be demonstrated through numerical examples.
