Abstract
The introduction to this drag marketplace anthology reviews the historical and contemporary visibility of drag as an art and as a business. A particular focus is placed on the mainstream appeal and acceptance of this – historically subcultural – practice. The chapter illustrates the fluctuations of drag’s appeal within the market and shows the cultural and political appeal of drag, for the queer community and beyond. This introduction also outlines the structure of the anthology and presents the three main themes: politicizing drag identities, marketizing drag and digitizing drag.
