Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of the literature on management as applied to architecture and explore the heritage of CIBW096 Architectural Design and Management. A reflective commentary is used to critically revisit some of the key texts that relate to a body of knowledge known as architectural management and more widely as architectural design and management. This includes an overview of the formative years of CIBW096 and its development, with links to some of the earlier work on computing and digital tools. The architectural management framework is used as a vehicle to provide context to the chapters in this book. The chapter briefly introduces the chapter contents under their sectional headings, concludes with a call for better management, not more management, and posits that digital tools are one way of helping architects achieve better synergy between architectural design and management.
