Abstract
Armed conflicts, broadly understood, directly and indirectly devastate human life. This chapter acts as an introduction to a collection of chapters that will address questions regarding who can prevent such violence, how it can be accomplished, and when conflict prevention should be implemented. It introduces the topic of conflict prevention and the subsequent chapters in this handbook.
