Abstract
This paper looks at aviation systems, and particularly at where breakdowns have occurred, to examine some of the issues faced in the design of systems comprising autonomous "components", in which situations, resources, activity and responsibilities are shared as joint activities. From this, closer consideration is given to the notions of shared knowledge, awareness and collaboration, and these are illustrated by examples of redesigns that follow from these concepts.
