Inter- and Intraparty Networks Among Finnish Parliamentary Candidates

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

To what extent do political candidates form online social networks with political candidates who share political and sociodemographic characteristics, such as their partisanship, ideology, incumbency status, gender and age? To answer this research question, we rely on an original datafile of Twitter retweets collected during the 2019 Finish election campaign. Exponential random graph models (ERGM) reveal a strong tendency of homophily, with an increased likelihood of retweeting among candidates who are similar on multiple identity dimensions, most strongly along partisanship and ideological lines.
