Abstract
This paper considers the limiting bandwidth available from arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) demultiplexers with a given filter bandwidth by deriving a very simple analytical description that considers ultimate short pulse performance. The analytic form is compared with a computer simulation of an AWG with a 200 GHz channel spacing and a 4000 GHz Free Spectral Range (FSR). A good agreement is also found for experimentally measured short pulse transmission through an AWG with a 100 GHz channel spacing and 200 GHz FSR.
