Abstract

This study considers the growth and decline of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), illustrating the dynamics between innovation-driven risk-taking and regulatory oversight within the entrepreneurial finance sector. It outlines SVB's genesis as a financial beacon for the technology and startup communities, emphasising its strategic pivot towards venture debt and other customised financial solutions. The unravelling of SVB under rising interest rates, asset-liability mismatches, and a sector-specific downturn is examined to underscore the vulnerabilities inherent in niche banking models. We further explore the contagion effects of SVB's collapse across the tech ecosystem, venture capital confidence, and the broader financial markets, culminating in a significant reevaluation of risk management practices and regulatory paradigms. The paper contributes to the discourse on the sustainability of specialised banking practices, offering insights into the delicate balance between fostering innovation and ensuring financial stability in the rapidly evolving landscape of entrepreneurial finance.
