How decomposable are nearly decomposable systems? The case of locomotive engine failures

Abstract

How many subsystems must fail for a locomotive engine to fail? How many subsystems actually fail in an engine failure? In this paper, we analyze a total of 172 Indian Railways locomotive engine failures to shed light on these questions.
