Abstract
A photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with a very high modal birefringence and a beatlength of 0.4 mm at 1540 nm was developed. Two different known direct methods were used for measuring the beatlength of the fiber. It was shown that the unusual optical properties of the PCF cladding are accompanied by unique mechanical properties, making it difficult to access light propagating down the core.
