Abstract

A proof-of-principle experimental demonstration of a dual channel multi-user optical network using subcarrier multiplexed 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (SCM-16QAM) for a high spectral-efficiency of 2 bit/s/Hz is reported. Bit error performance is evaluated for each of the two 1 Gbit/s SCM 16QAM channels with no penalty for fibre transmission over 25km. In order to investigate the feasibility of the multichannel 1 Gbit/s 16QAM network, a single wavelength multi-SCM channel simulation is performed, showing the possibility of implementing a 12×1 Gbit/s SCM optical network.
