High Performance QCSE Phase Modulator for the 1.5-1.55μm Fibre Band

Abstract

A low drive voltage, InP-based waveguide optical phase modulator for the 1.5-1.55μm fibre band is reported. Vn values of 3.5Vmm at 1.5μm wavelength and 4.6V mm at 1.55μm are obtained. No change in the transmitted light intensity is discernible at 1.55μm, with just 0.27dBmm-1 modulation accompanying a 0-5 V voltage swing at 1.5μm. An 850μm long device had a bandwidth of 2.8GHz, limited by parasitic bond-pad capacitance.
