Globalization, urbanization and sporting spectacle in Pacific Asia: Places, peoples and pastness

Within this paper we “hold together” an amalgam of intensive and extensive glocalization and the simultaneous reinscription of the importance of the global growth rationalities to aid understandings of contemporary Pacific Asian sporting spectacles. Through a series of four vignettes, we point to the place of sport within intense transformations within urban conglomerations in Pacific Asia. In so doing, we point to three central, and interrelated, problematics that appear endemic to Pacific Asian mega-events; raising questions over whose histories, whose representations and which peoples matter to, and for, the Pacific Asian sporting spectacle. Conclusions are centered on attuning our scholarly directions toward the structural inequalities embedded within these processes and transformations.

Dans cet article, nous discutons d’un amalgame de « glocalisations » intensive et extensive ainsi que de la réinscription simultanée de l’importance des rationalités touchant à la croissance mondiale pour aider la compréhension de spectacles sportifs contemporains de l’Asie-Pacifique. Grâce à une série de quatre vignettes, nous soulignons la place du sport dans les transformations intenses des agglomérations urbaines en Asie-Pacifique. Ce faisant, nous soulignons trois questions centrales et interdépendantes qui semblent endémiques aux méga-événements en Asie-Pacifique : des questions au sujet de quelles histoires, quelles représentations et quelles populations importent au spectacle sportif de l’Asie-Pacifique. Les conclusions sont centrées sur l’harmonisation de nos orientations de recherche vers les inégalités structurelles intégrées dans de tels processus et transformations.
