This paper describes an empirical study carried out in a construction company aiming to investigate the connections between building design process and production as part of the Product Development Process (PDP). The objective in this study is the investigation and implementation of tools that can support the management of PDP in a construction project. The study was developed in a middle size company in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre – RS – Brazil. The study considered the client requirement management and integrated planning of design and production process as a way to facilitate the coordination and commitment among participants in the process. This study has found that the company must still develop a number of skills to achieve core competences in PDP management so that such skills will allow competitive advantages.
