Abstract
The writing of Adalbert Stifter has been examined in three recent collections of essays on German-language literature in the Anthropocene. This article reviews the grounds for considering Stifter an early Anthropocene author, and discusses the passages in Der Nachsommer depicting Freiherr von Risach's gardening practices with an eye to qualities associated with gardening in the Anthropocene. Stifter depicts gardening as a way of interacting with nature characterized by respect, care and cooperation. At the same time, he develops aesthetic strategies which anticipate and respond to the challenge which the Anthropocene poses to the novel as a literary form.
