Abstract
This introductory chapter aims to give voice to the lived experience of affected family members (AFMs). Based on qualitative interviews, commonalities and variations of the effects that addiction-type-problems can have on family members are depicted, using excerpts from selected interviews. While all AFMs showed remarkable levels of stress and strain, and similar coping dilemmas, the stressors and living conditions they described varied considerably. At the end of each story, we have highlighted the key themes that have emerged, and these key themes are then summarized at the end in the chapter’s conclusion.
