Abstract

This paper presents a first attempt at formulating a complete framework for estimating the probable maximum flood (PMF) in UK catchments using the Revitalised Flood Hydrograph (ReFH) model. The framework translates most of the guidelines developed for the FSR/FEH rainfall-runoff model, but a new method for estimating initial soil moisture in line with the ReFH loss model is proposed. The framework has been tested using both ReFH 2.2 and ReFH 2.3 against previously published PMF results for 15 reservoired catchments and found to provide comparable and credible results.
