Abstract

This Text explains the importance of a knowledge of materials in structural engineering. It presents:

Guidance on material selection for use in construction
Significant structural and mechanical properties that need to be considered in structural engineering
Treatment of materials in current design philosophy

The application of these thought processes is necessary when specifying and using structural materials. Their use is illustrated through a short case study of the 2012 Olympic Velodrome.
