Abstract

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVDs) are the most common cause of both mortality and morbidity globally. They place a large burden on individuals, health systems, and countries due to years lost to premature mortality and disability caused by the diseases. Within this article, we discuss the global burden of ASCVDs through deaths and disability caused by them, consider inequalities between countries and individuals in the risk of ASCVDs, and review the factors that lead to and cause ASCVDs along with approaches to treat and prevent them.
