Abstract

It is shown that an uncooled DFB laser with a strong gain-coupled grating shows enhanced link performance when compared with an otherwise identical index coupled laser. Transmission penalty improvements of as much as 3 dB are predicted from simulation at 10 Gb/s rates even at high temperature of 90 degrees over a 20 km SMF link. These simulations are verified by comparison with experiment.
